Benjamin was descended from Benoni Trumbull, the brother of Joseph Trumbull, the father of Governor Trumbull. Benjamin was the fifth generation descendant of the progenitor, John Trumbull. Governor Trumbull was the fourth generation descendant of the progenitor, John Trumbull. Benjamin was a second cousin to the six children of Governor Trumbull. In an interview published in the Connecticut section of The New York Times, August 14, 1994, David Philips "freely admits to altering some [stories] to make them more memorable."
