  1. I visited Gillette Castle in the early 1980ies, it was an unbelievable experience. To see and walk through the home of Mr. Gillette was extraordinary. The decor and the stories about William Gillette being seen walking the grounds and maids actually smelling the aroma of tobacco i.e., the pipe he smoked. I was astonished. I must say I wandered off the “tour line” and found a small entrance I went down some small steps(concrete) and came upon what must have been the Maid’s quarters. It was as if they were still there. Place settings etc., as I was about to take a final step towards the actual room, something pushed me on my left side causing me to slip down two steps, needless to say, I gasped and ran back up towards doorway I went into…I will never forget the feeling, as if someone was saying you don’t belong here, to this day…I still shiver when I think about it. I hope to visit again one day soon. It was an incredible sight…I wonder if that room still exists.
