POMFRET, Conn. (AP) – Pomfret fire officials say a homeowner apparently was unaware his house was on fire until his alarm company called him.
Assistant Fire Chief Edward Bates says Andrew Riley told him he was elsewhere in the house listening to music on an iPod.
Bates says the homeowner says he didnt smell smoke or hear a smoke alarm sounding on the second floor of the house after a fire broke out in an exercise room on the upper floor of the 21/2- story house.
However, after receiving the call Thursday afternoon, Riley dashed upstairs and shut a door to the burning room, helping to contain the fire.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and quickly put out the blaze, limiting the damage to the exercise room and an adjoining office.
